— Nightshoot Nan
The poster that went round last week looks real because it is real — somebody made it, in the promoter’s house style, with the right fonts. What it is not is a list of acts who have agreed to play.
Three names on it are, as far as anyone in the touring end of this business can tell, unsigned. Two of them are in the second row of type, which is exactly where you put an act you are trying to move.
The mechanism is old and it is aimed at the acts, not at you:
The tell is the type size. A genuine early-stage poster has gaps — deliberate blank space where the unconfirmed slots are. This one has no gaps at all, which means somebody laid out a finished-looking thing before the deals were finished.
None of this makes the festival dodgy. It makes it a business with a cash-flow date and a hold on a site, doing what everyone in that position does. But if you are buying an early-bird ticket on the strength of the second row of that poster, you are buying a negotiation.
